Vale dos Vinhedos is located in the rolling hills of Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. This picturesque “Valley of the Vineyards” is Brazil’s leading wine region, with a climate influenced by its elevation of 450–650 meters and the Atlantic winds. The region experiences moderate temperatures, cool nights, and sufficient rainfall, which allows grapes to ripen slowly and retain fresh acidity.
The soils are diverse but are largely comprised of clay, loam, and volcanic material, lending complexity and minerality to the wines. The high altitude helps counteract the summer heat and makes the growing season longer, resulting in wines that are well-balanced and elegant.
Merlot is the signature red grape here, producing soft, approachable red wines, though Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Malbec, Pinot Noir, and Marselan are also cultivated. Chardonnay stands out as the primary white grape, often yielding bright, aromatic wines, while Moscato is used for fresh, aromatic styles and sparkling wines.
Vale dos Vinhedos was recognized in 2012 as Brazil’s first Denomination of Origin (DO). Regulations dictate permitted grape varieties and limits on yields and production methods to uphold quality. Notable producers include Casa Valduga, Lidio Carraro, and Don Guerino.
Wines from this region generally offer ripe red fruits, refreshing acidity, and finesse. While many are best enjoyed young, some reds and sparkling wines can age gracefully for several years.
