Napa Valley

Napa Valley, located in Northern California just north of San Francisco, is America's most famous wine region. It stretches from the city of Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north, framed by coastal and Mayacamas mountains which create varied microclimates. The climate ranges from cool and foggy in the south to warmer and sunnier in the north, offering ideal conditions for a variety of grapes.

Soils are highly diverse—ranging from volcanic gravel in the hills to alluvial sediment and clay along the valley floor. This mosaic of terroirs allows Napa to produce complex, expressive wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature grape, yielding robust, ageworthy reds with blackberry, cassis, and cedar notes. Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc are also significant. The valley is particularly renowned for its Bordeaux-style blends and rich Chardonnays. Winegrowing is governed by the Napa Valley AVA, officially recognized since 1981, ensuring rigorous standards.

Key towns include St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, and Yountville. Napa wines are typically intense and fruit-driven with well-integrated oak and tannins, especially in the top Cabernet Sauvignons, which often age gracefully for many years.
