About Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is a Champagne house based in Reims and founded in 1772. Its name refers to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, who took charge after the death of her husband, François Clicquot, in 1805. As a veuve, or widow, she gave the house its enduring identity. Her place in Champagne’s early history is remarkable: Veuve Clicquot is among the houses that helped shape both the technical progress and commercial development of sparkling Champagne.

Several important milestones are commonly associated with the house. The 1810 harvest is generally cited as the first known vintage Champagne, a wine made from a single harvest year. In 1816, the riddling table, or pupitre, was developed to move yeast sediment gradually into the bottle neck, making clean disgorgement possible. Two years later, the house produced one of the first known blended rosé Champagnes by combining still red and white wines. This remains the defining method for most rosé Champagne today.

Veuve Clicquot’s character is largely built around Pinot Noir, supported by Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Pinot Noir provides structure, colour and a firm backbone; Chardonnay contributes tension and freshness, while Meunier adds roundness. Grapes come from across Champagne, where the cool northern climate, chalk-rich soils and traditional second fermentation in bottle create naturally high acidity, fine mousse and the capacity to develop with age. Like other major négociant houses, Veuve Clicquot works with estate vineyards as well as purchased grapes and wines from different villages.

Brut Carte Jaune is the best-known house cuvée: a non-vintage brut with a fruity, vinous and versatile profile. The range also includes rosé, demi-sec, sec and Rich bottlings, along with Vintage Brut and Vintage Rosé from selected harvests. La Grande Dame is the house’s prestige cuvée and has a strong Pinot Noir focus, while Extra Brut Extra Old highlights matured reserve wines and a drier dosage. Veuve Clicquot is therefore especially associated with full-bodied, Pinot Noir-led Champagne, toast-like maturity notes and a distinctly gastronomic character.
