Domaine Valentin Zusslin is a family estate in Orschwihr, in southern Alsace. The Zusslin family has cultivated vines there since 1691. The estate is run by the Zusslin family and has farmed organically and biodynamically since the 1990s. This approach suits a producer focused on allowing individual sites, soils and grape varieties to show clearly in the finished wines.

Its vineyards lie around Orschwihr at the foot of the Vosges. The mountain barrier limits Atlantic rainfall and contributes to Alsace’s relatively dry climate. Two sites are especially important. Bollenberg is a warm, dry hillside with calcareous soils, particularly suited to generous, spicy and broad-textured Pinot Gris. Grand Cru Pfingstberg is higher and cooler. Its intricate geology, including sandstone and calcareous components, lends Riesling tension and a pronounced mineral line.

In the cellar, Zusslin follows a restrained course. Fermentation and ageing are handled with an eye to texture, freshness and origin rather than an overtly technical signature. The resulting Alsace wines are generally dry, or only gently rounded, combining ripe fruit with enough acidity and phenolic grip to work well at the table. Concentration is balanced by clarity and, at times, a saline finish.

Pinot Gris ‘Bollenberg’ usually reflects its sunny, limestone-rich lieu-dit through pear, stone fruit, spice and an earthy note, all supported by firm structure. Riesling Alsace Grand Cru ‘Pfingstberg’ is tauter and more persistent, with citrus, white peach, floral aromas and mineral character; it is well suited to bottle development. Crémant d’Alsace Brut Zéro, made without dosage, reveals a drier, more immediate side of the estate. Chardonnay contributes finesse, tension and a chalky impression. Zusslin is best known for site-specific, biodynamically grown Alsace wines that combine gastronomic poise with ageing potential.
