About Torrevento
Torrevento is a producer based in Corato, northern Puglia, at the foot of the Murgia plateau. The Liantonio family’s connection with wine reaches back to the early twentieth century. Today’s estate continues that family tradition from a restored former Benedictine monastery in the hamlet of Torrevento. The name, roughly meaning “wind tower”, suits the exposed and breezy landscape of the Alta Murgia.
Its focal point is Castel del Monte, where vineyards commonly lie on limestone-rich, stony soils. Altitude, wind and comparatively marked day–night temperature shifts help retain freshness in a region where grapes can otherwise ripen quickly. Torrevento also works with appellations elsewhere in Puglia, including Primitivo di Manduria, Salice Salentino and Moscato di Trani. The range therefore offers a useful view of both the region’s red-wine traditions and its sweet, aromatic wines.
Nero di Troia is Castel del Monte’s defining grape and is central to wines such as Vigna Pedale Riserva, Torre del Falco and Bolonero. It can deliver firm tannin, black cherry and plum fruit, herbal or spicy notes, and considerable structure. Castel del Monte Rosso and Pezzapiana often reflect a blending approach, combining local varieties with grapes such as Aglianico or Montepulciano. Vigna Pedale takes its name from a single vineyard and represents the estate’s more concentrated, age-worthy expression.
Torrevento also produces approachable Primitivo wines, including Primo Primitivo, Infinitum and Since 1913, alongside the fuller Ghenos Primitivo di Manduria. In Salice Salentino, Negroamaro is generally paired with Malvasia Nera for ripe, savoury and spicy reds; the Riserva bottlings are intended for greater development. Torrevento is especially useful for understanding Puglia’s contrasts: structured Nero di Troia from the calcareous Murgia beside the softer, sun-ripened character of Primitivo and Negroamaro from farther south.
