About Taittinger
Taittinger is one of the major Champagne houses of Reims that remains under family leadership. The Taittinger name became associated with the house in 1932, when Pierre Taittinger acquired the then Maison Forest-Fourneaux. The commercial house itself had older, eighteenth-century roots. In 2005 the business was sold to Starwood Capital; in 2006 Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, with financial backing, brought the Champagne house back into family ownership. It is now led by Vitalie Taittinger.
Based in Reims, Taittinger draws on a substantial estate of vineyards as well as long-term grower relationships. Its cellars run beneath the former Abbey of Saint-Nicaise and include Gallo-Roman chalk quarries. These cool, stable underground spaces suit the extended bottle ageing required for Champagne. The house works with fruit from across the region, including the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne, allowing it to blend varied sites and varieties.
Chardonnay has an unusually prominent role in the Taittinger style, including in wines that are not solely Chardonnay. It commonly brings freshness, finesse, floral notes, citrus, white peach and a chalky edge, while Pinot Noir supplies structure and Pinot Meunier adds suppleness. Brut Réserve is the non-vintage reference wine. Brut La Française is a historic name associated with the house. Its rosé is made by blending in still red wine, the traditional Champagne approach.
At the top of the range is Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, a prestige cuvée from Chardonnay grown in Côte des Blancs grand cru villages and released only in suitable vintages. Comtes de Champagne Rosé combines Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Prélude Grands Crus focuses on grand cru fruit, while Millésimé Brut expresses a single harvest. Les Folies de la Marquetterie refers to a specific vineyard near the house. Nocturne is a sec Champagne, with noticeably more dosage than brut, making it particularly suitable for later-evening drinking or desserts.
