About Sébastien Magnien
Sébastien Magnien is a Côte de Beaune producer working with the two defining grapes of Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In this selection, the range extends from Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune to site-specific wines from Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. It therefore offers a useful view of both the cooler, elevated hinterland of the Hautes-Côtes and the celebrated slopes of the Côte d’Or.
The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune vineyards are situated on higher ground behind the Côte de Beaune. Altitude and cooler nights commonly preserve bright acidity and clarity of fruit in both red and white wines. Closer to the main Côte d’Or escarpment, the wines draw on more familiar village names. Beaune Premier Cru Les Aigrots is a recognised premier cru site in Beaune, while Les Folatières is among Puligny-Montrachet’s important premier-cru lieux-dits.
The reds are Pinot Noir and underline the distinctions between appellations. Pommard, represented here by Les Perrières and Les Petits Noizons, is generally associated with firmer structure, darker cherry fruit, earthy nuance and more evident tannin than the more fragrant, supple Volnay Les Echards. Beaune Les Aigrots often sits between those expressions, combining red fruit and spice with a defined but balanced grip. Vintage and individual parcel naturally remain decisive.
The white Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Folatières are Chardonnay wines. The former commonly emphasises citrus, orchard fruit and freshness. Puligny-Montrachet classically combines tension, chalky mineral character, white flowers and measured texture. Sébastien Magnien is consequently of interest to drinkers who want to compare Côte de Beaune origins, from approachable regional Burgundy to cellar-worthy premier cru.
