About San Silvestro

San Silvestro is a Piedmontese producer based in Novello, a village within the Barolo area of the Langhe. The estate is linked to the Sartirano family, active in wine trading and production since the nineteenth century. From Novello, San Silvestro works with grapes from several parts of Piedmont. Its range therefore combines the leading Nebbiolo appellations of the Langhe with approachable, fruit-led wines from areas including Monferrato and Asti.

That location explains the focus on Barolo, although the house’s map of origins is wider. The calcareous marl hills of the Langhe suit Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Arneis particularly well. Barbaresco is likewise made from Nebbiolo sourced within its defined appellation. Further east, the cooler vineyards around Gavi provide Cortese for crisp white wines, while Moscato d’Asti derives its aromatic, gently sparkling character from Moscato. Barbera d’Asti comes principally from the Asti and Monferrato area; Barbera d’Alba is grown closer to the Langhe.

Nebbiolo is at the heart of the wines with the greatest ageing potential. Patres Barolo, Serra dei Turchi Barolo and Barolo Riserva express the classic combination of red fruit, rose, herbs, tar-like notes and firm tannins that develop with bottle age. Magno Barbaresco and Barbaresco Riserva present the same grape in a generally perfumed, refined frame. Brumo Nebbiolo d’Alba is a more immediate expression of Nebbiolo, while Barbera wines such as Albarizza Barbera d’Asti Superiore and Dominae Barbera d’Alba place greater emphasis on juicy dark fruit, lively acidity and softer tannins.

San Silvestro is best understood through this broad, recognisably Piedmontese portfolio. Fossili Gavi del Comune di Gavi offers dry Cortese with citrus, white flowers and stony freshness. Moscato d’Asti occupies the aromatic, lightly sweet end of the range. Appassimento Barbera Passito indicates a richer style made with dried grapes. For wine lovers, the house’s appeal lies in the meeting of appellation-focused Nebbiolo, versatile Barbera and fresh Piedmontese whites.
