About Ruinart
Ruinart is among Champagne’s oldest established houses. It was founded in Reims in 1729, at a time when sparkling wine was beginning to travel beyond Champagne with increasing regularity. Its name recalls Dom Thierry Ruinart, a Benedictine monk who, in the late seventeenth century, had recognised the potential of the region’s emerging sparkling wines. From the outset, shipment mattered: Champagne was still a delicate, technically demanding wine to transport.
The house is based in Reims and ages much of its stock in historic chalk cellars known as crayères. Their cool, stable conditions support slow, even bottle maturation. Ruinart’s crayères form part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing, “Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars”. The blends draw on fruit from across Champagne, with Chardonnay providing the house’s clearest stylistic thread and Pinot Noir playing an essential role, particularly in rosé.
Ruinart is known for a refined, transparent style, usually built around freshness. Chardonnay contributes citrus, white flowers, stone fruit and a chalky mineral note; with bottle age, brioche, hazelnut and honey can develop. R de Ruinart Brut is the house’s accessible non-vintage expression, while Blanc de Blancs Brut most directly presents its Chardonnay identity. Brut Rosé generally marries Chardonnay’s tension with Pinot Noir’s red-fruit character and structure.
At the top of the range are Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Dom Ruinart Rosé, prestige Champagnes released as vintage wines only when the harvest is judged suitable. The portfolio also includes vintage Champagne, L’Exclusive Blanc de Blancs and a historic Chardonnay Coteaux Champenois, a still wine from Champagne. The finer cuvées offer finesse when young, but their acidity, structure and time on lees also give them worthwhile ageing potential.
