About Pieropan
Pieropan is one of Soave’s historic names. Founded in 1880 in the town of Soave, this family estate played an important role in establishing the appellation’s reputation beyond Italy. During the twentieth century, the family deliberately focused on estate bottlings and the expression of individual vineyard sites, at a time when Soave was often associated with high-volume production. That focus remains central to the estate today.
Its vineyards are concentrated in the hills of the Soave Classico zone, around Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone. Altitude, aspect and geology matter greatly here: volcanic basalt commonly brings salinity, tension and smoky mineral notes, while limestone-rich sites tend to give broader, softer structure. Garganega is the principal grape; Pieropan also uses Trebbiano di Soave in some of its classic Soave wines. The climate combines continental conditions with cooling air currents from the hills.
Calvarino Soave Classico is the estate’s celebrated, often most linear cru, marked by citrus, white flowers, almond, herbs and a pronounced mineral line. La Rocca Soave Classico, from a limestone slope, is generally richer and more layered, with riper stone fruit, waxy nuances and greater texture. Both are reference points for the ageing capacity of dry Soave. The regular Soave Classico presents the region’s more immediately approachable, fresh side without losing its sense of place.
Pieropan also makes sweet Recioto di Soave, including Le Colombare, a passito wine from dried white grapes that combines concentrated fruit with lively acidity. In Valpolicella, the estate produces reds such as Ruberpan Valpolicella Superiore and Amarone della Valpolicella Vigna Garzon. These draw on the local tradition of Corvina and related varieties, offering ripe red and dark fruit, spice and structure. Pieropan is therefore rooted in Soave, yet its work extends beyond a single wine style.
