About Kleine Zalze
Kleine Zalze is a Stellenbosch wine producer in South Africa’s Western Cape. The estate is based in a region that has been one of the country’s leading wine areas since the seventeenth century. Stellenbosch lies inland from False Bay, yet maritime influence reaches many vineyard sites through afternoon breezes. Together with warm, dry summers and cooler nights, this helps grapes achieve ripeness while retaining useful freshness.
Soils around Stellenbosch are diverse, with decomposed granite, sandstone, loam and clay all widely encountered. Elevation, aspect and distance from the ocean strongly influence which varieties perform best. Kleine Zalze sources fruit from different parts of Stellenbosch and, when appropriate for a wine’s style, from other suitable Cape vineyards. Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay benefit from cooler sites, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Mourvèdre are well suited to warmer, freely draining parcels.
The range is organised into clear tiers. Cellar Selection focuses on approachable varietal wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. Vineyard Selection places greater emphasis on site, selection and maturation; the Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are notable examples. Bush Vines Chenin Blanc refers to low-trained, freestanding vines. Such old or low-yielding bush vines can produce concentrated fruit, although the exact vineyard sources may vary by vintage.
Red blends are another recognisable part of the house style. Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Viognier follow a Rhône-inspired model, combining dark fruit and spice from the red grapes with a small aromatic contribution from Viognier. Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc sits at the more ambitious end of the white-wine range. Across the portfolio, Kleine Zalze generally aims for ripe fruit without losing the freshness and savoury detail associated with Stellenbosch. The barrel-matured wines usually offer more texture and cellaring potential than the Cellar Selection bottlings.
