About Giacomo Grimaldi
Giacomo Grimaldi is a Langhe producer from Piedmont, the hilly area that is home to Barolo. The estate focuses on the region’s classic grapes: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Its range moves from approachable Alba wines to separately named Barolos, offering both the everyday and more layered sides of the Langhe, with Nebbiolo at its centre.
The vineyards are in and around the Barolo area and the zone for Nebbiolo d’Alba. Barolo is a DOCG shaped by calcareous clay and marl hillsides, where Nebbiolo ripens slowly and develops its characteristic combination of perfume, structure and freshness. Le Coste in Barolo and Sotto Castello di Novello identify origins within the appellation. Novello, on the western side of the Barolo zone, can produce Barolos that combine aromatic lift and an often approachable texture with ample tannin for development.
Giacomo Grimaldi’s Barolos, including Le Coste Barolo and Sotto Castello di Novello Barolo, generally reward patience both at the table and in the cellar. Young Barolo often suggests rose, sour cherry, red plum, tar, spice and earth; bottle age brings dried flowers, tobacco and truffle-like notes. The regular Barolo gives a broad view of the house style, while the named vineyard wines place greater emphasis on the distinction of site.
Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d’Alba presents another expression of Nebbiolo. This DOC is generally more accessible earlier than Barolo, with lively red fruit, floral notes and firm yet less monumental structure. Pistin Barbera d’Alba highlights Barbera’s juiciness, dark-cherry character and natural freshness. Dolcetto d’Alba is usually the most immediate wine in the range: dry, fruity, gently almond-toned and especially useful at the table.
