About Domaine Maby

Domaine Maby is a family estate in Tavel, on the Rhône’s right bank, northwest of Avignon. The domaine is closely associated with Tavel and Lirac, two historic cru appellations of the southern Rhône. Its vineyards benefit from a distinctly Mediterranean setting: hot, dry summers, abundant sunshine and the cooling, drying influence of the mistral.

Soils around Tavel and Lirac are notably varied. Rounded galets roulés store heat and assist ripening, while sand, limestone and clay in other sites can bring freshness, structure or finesse. Grenache generally provides the backbone for both reds and rosés, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault contributing spice, dark-fruit depth, tannin and aromatic suppleness. This palette is well suited to the southern Rhône’s naturally generous yet potentially balanced wines.

Tavel is unusual in being an appellation devoted exclusively to rosé. Its wines are usually more gastronomic and more structured than very pale, easy-drinking Provençal rosés. Prima Donna Tavel belongs in that tradition: a rosé with colour, ripe red-fruit character, spice and enough grip for the table. It is best served cool rather than ice-cold, allowing its aroma and texture to show fully.

In Lirac, Domaine Maby makes red wines including La Fermade Lirac Rouge, Bel Canto Lirac Rouge and a Lirac Rouge cuvée. Lirac reds commonly centre on Grenache, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. Expect cherry and blackberry fruit, dried Mediterranean herbs, pepper and sometimes earthy or garrigue-like notes. The strongest examples combine ripeness with freshness and can gain further nuance after a few years in bottle. Domaine Maby is therefore especially associated with site-conscious wines from Tavel and Lirac: rosé treated as a serious food wine, and reds carrying the warmth, spice and structure of the southern Rhône.
