About Coltibuono
Coltibuono, often referred to as Badia a Coltibuono, is a historic estate in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, in the southeastern sector of the Chianti Classico area. Its name is generally rendered as “abbey of the good harvest”, a reference to the medieval abbey at the centre of the property. That ecclesiastical past still informs the estate’s setting, architecture and strongly agricultural identity.
Its vineyards sit in the rolling country between Florence and Siena, where altitude, woodland and stony soils help moderate the Tuscan warmth. Chianti Classico is fundamentally Sangiovese territory. Here the grape can give fragrant reds marked by cherry, violet, herbs, lively acidity and dry, tactile tannins. Coltibuono also draws on traditional Tuscan varieties including Ciliegiolo and Mammolo. Trebbiano and Malvasia are particularly relevant to its Vin Santo.
The range presents several interpretations of the place. Chianti Classico is the most immediate, food-friendly expression of Sangiovese, while the Riservas receive additional ageing and generally show greater depth and structure. Cultus Boni Chianti Classico Riserva represents a more selective and serious expression within that framework. Chianti Cetamura takes its name from the nearby Etruscan site of Cetamura and belongs to the approachable Chianti tradition.
Sangioveto di Toscana focuses on Sangiovese outside the classic Chianti designation and often offers a more concentrated, ageworthy profile. Vin Santo del Chianti Classico provides the sweet counterpoint: grapes are dried after harvest and the wine matures slowly, developing notes of dried fruit, nuts, honey and spice. Coltibuono therefore appeals especially to drinkers seeking Chianti through the lenses of historical continuity, Sangiovese and Tuscan food culture.
