About Château de Sales
Château de Sales is one of Pomerol’s long-established family estates, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The property has remained with the Lambert family for centuries, an unusual continuity in an appellation where many prestigious estates are small and have changed hands over time. De Sales is a familiar name in Pomerol, yet its wines generally favour a classical, restrained expression of the district rather than an overtly luxurious or powerful style.
At around 47 hectares, Château de Sales is the largest vineyard estate in Pomerol. Its parcels are chiefly situated in the north-western part of the appellation, on relatively level ground with sand, gravel and clay in the soils. This setting can give a different register from Pomerol’s most clay-dominant central sites: the wines may be more aromatic and approachable, with less emphasis on sheer density. Bordeaux’s temperate maritime climate makes careful vineyard work, selection and harvest timing particularly important.
Merlot is the principal grape and provides the supple texture and plum-like fruit expected of Pomerol. Cabernet Franc contributes fragrance, freshness and savoury spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon can bring structure and backbone. The final blend varies with the vintage. Vinification and ageing aim to preserve fruit and site character; new oak is used as a framing element rather than as the defining flavour.
The estate’s principal wine, Château de Sales Pomerol, commonly shows black cherry, plum, blackcurrant, cedar and dried-herb notes, with earthier or truffle-like nuances developing in bottle. It is well suited to roast meats and poultry when young, while strong vintages can gain complexity with cellar ageing. Chantalouette is also produced as the estate’s second wine and is usually intended for earlier drinking. Château de Sales is valued for dependable, traditionally styled Pomerol: refined, balanced and approachable, while retaining worthwhile ageing potential.
