About Château de Pommard
Château de Pommard is a Burgundian estate in the village of Pommard, on the Côte de Beaune. The history of the present property reaches back to 1726. Its defining site is Clos Marey-Monge, a walled vineyard of about 20 hectares surrounding the château. According to the supplied source, the estate, its buildings and winemaking facilities were purchased by Michael Baum in 2014.
Pommard has long been associated with structured, ageworthy red Burgundy. Its Côte de Beaune setting can produce Pinot Noir combining dark fruit, cherry, earthy notes, spice and firm yet ripe tannins. Within Clos Marey-Monge, Château de Pommard works with separate parcels, allowing differences of soil and exposure to be expressed in the wines. The estate trialled biodynamic methods on 2.5 hectares in 2016.
Alongside its clos wines from Pinot Noir, the house offers “Family Wines”: Bourgogne, village, premier cru and grand cru bottlings drawn from appellations in both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The range includes Pommard Rouge and cuvées such as Cuvée Simone and Vivant, as well as Gevrey-Chambertin. This gives the producer access to two familiar Burgundian expressions: Pommard’s more structured, often earthy Pinot Noir and the perfumed refinement associated with Gevrey-Chambertin.
Chardonnay provides the white counterpart, notably through Chassagne-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Cailleret. Chassagne-Montrachet commonly yields dry whites with citrus, stone fruit, hazelnut and a chalky sense of tension; Cailleret is a high-sited premier cru regarded for finesse and freshness. Ratafia de Bourgogne, a regional vin de liqueur made from grape must and spirit, also appears in the range. Château de Pommard is therefore principally a producer built around a historic Pommard clos, complemented by a broad view of classical Burgundian origins.
