About Château de Fieuzal
Château de Fieuzal is based in Léognan, south of the city of Bordeaux, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The estate therefore belongs to the northern part of Graves, a historic source of both red and dry white Bordeaux. Its red wine is listed among the Crus Classés de Graves in the classifications of 1953 and 1959. This status applies specifically to the red wine; the estate’s dry white wine was not classified at the time.
Pessac-Léognan vineyards occupy the gravelly terraces that have shaped the area’s reputation. Gravel provides drainage and stores heat, while local clay and sandy subsoils add variations in water supply and ripening. The temperate Atlantic climate makes precise work in vineyard and cellar essential. Cabernet Sauvignon generally provides the backbone of the red blend, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are the key white varieties.
The red Château de Fieuzal is classically Pessac-Léognan in character: structured, with dark and red fruit, cedar-like and earthy notes, and often the smoky, mineral nuance associated with Graves. Freshness and tannin give the wine an ability to develop well in suitable vintages. The white Château de Fieuzal is dry, balancing Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic lift and freshness with the breadth, texture and ageing capacity of Sémillon. The estate also makes L’Abeille de Fieuzal in red and white. These wines express the same origin in a generally more approachable form.
Fieuzal is particularly relevant to drinkers who want to explore both sides of Pessac-Léognan: red Graves with structure and cellaring potential, and dry white Bordeaux with freshness and gastronomic range. Serve the red at a moderate temperature, and consider decanting a mature bottle. The white is a natural match for fish, shellfish and dishes with creamy sauces.
