About Cabriz
Cabriz is a Dão producer from one of northern inland Portugal’s classic quality regions. Its name is associated with Quinta de Cabriz, near Carregal do Sal. The estate’s range is firmly rooted in regional identity: rather than placing international varieties at its centre, it relies on the distinctive red and white grapes of the Dão. For many drinkers, Cabriz offers an approachable introduction to the region.
Dão occupies an elevated plateau sheltered by mountains. Granite soils, varying elevations and cool nights help the grapes retain freshness despite Portugal’s abundant sunshine. The climate combines continental influence with an Atlantic moderating effect. Vineyards are often surrounded by woodland, and the resulting wines generally feel less heavy and warm in character than some reds from southern Portugal.
For reds, Touriga Nacional is an important starting point, joined by Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro Preto and Baga. Cabriz makes Colheita Seleccionada Tinto, Dão Reserva, Touriga Nacional Dão and Edição Especial Tinto, among others. Expect ripe red and dark fruit, floral notes from Touriga Nacional, herbs, fresh acidity and, in the more serious cuvées, tannin that provides structure. Pedro&Inês is a proprietary cuvée whose name refers to Portugal’s celebrated love story.
The white wines illustrate why Encruzado is Dão’s leading white grape. Encruzado Dão, Dão Reserva Branco and Colheita Seleccionada White generally bring together citrus and stone fruit with energy, and sometimes a gently creamy texture. Malvasia Fina, Bical and Cerceal Branco add to the palette. Cabriz also produces rosé and traditional-method Dão sparkling wines, including brut and meio seco bottlings. The range therefore extends from straightforward, fruit-led wines to reserves with greater structure and ageing capacity.
