About Bollinger
Bollinger is a Champagne house based in Aÿ, in the Montagne de Reims, founded in 1829 by Hennequin de Villermont, Paul Renaudin and Jacques Bollinger. The house has remained associated with the Bollinger family and is one of Champagne’s established independent names. In Britain, Bollinger is affectionately called “Bolly”, a familiarity reinforced by its long association with James Bond.
Pinot Noir is central to the house style, usually supported by Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Bollinger owns and sources fruit from important Champagne villages, with Aÿ as its historic focal point. Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims contributes structure, red-fruit character and ageing capacity, while Chardonnay adds freshness and line. For its blends, the house retains reserve wines—often kept in magnums—to lend depth and consistency to its non-vintage releases.
Special Cuvée Brut is the signature wine: full, dry and vinous, showing ripe apple, citrus, brioche and often a discreet toasted note. Rosé Brut extends that firm foundation with red-berry fruit. PN is a series exploring Pinot Noir from differing origins and harvests. The vintage wines, La Grande Année and La Grande Année Rosé, are made only in selected years and are noted for their broad, gastronomic character and long bottle development.
R.D., or Récemment Dégorgé, is La Grande Année given exceptionally prolonged lees ageing and disgorged shortly before release; its extra-brut dosage preserves a taut profile. Vieilles Vignes Françaises Blanc de Noirs is a very limited Pinot Noir cuvée from ungrafted vines, a rarity in Champagne. Bollinger also makes La Côte Aux Enfants, a still red wine from Aÿ, underlining Pinot Noir’s central place at the house.
