Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Prosecco is a hilly region in Veneto, northeastern Italy, regarded as the heartland of top-quality Prosecco production. It stretches between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, about 50 kilometers north of Venice. The temperate climate, with cool nights, helps to retain the natural acidity and freshness typical of these sparkling wines.

Soils are largely a mix of limestone, clay, and sand, shaped by millennia of geological changes. These varied soils contribute to a distinctive mineral character, especially in the higher-lying "Rive" vineyards.

Glera is the main grape, giving Prosecco its hallmark freshness and fruity aromas. Lesser amounts of native varieties like Verdiso, Perera, and Bianchetta Trevigiana are also permitted, along with some Chardonnay and Pinot Noir or Pinot Bianco, though these play a minor role.

Production is strictly regulated under DOCG status, the highest wine category in Italy. The wines are produced in styles ranging from Brut to Extra Dry and Dry, differing mainly in their residual sugar content. Most are lively, light sparkling wines with notes of green apple, pear, white peach, and spring flowers. The Superiore wines from Conegliano-Valdobbiadene are known for greater complexity and occasionally have some aging potential, particularly those from top grapes such as Cartizze.

Notable villages include Valdobbiadene, Conegliano, and San Pietro di Barbozza. While Prosecco is usually enjoyed in its youth for its vibrant style, the very best examples may develop nicely over several years.
