About Fattoria le Pupille

Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the estates that helped shape the modern reputation of the Maremma in southern Tuscany. Based near Pereta, close to Scansano and within the Morellino di Scansano area, the property has grown from a local farming estate into a producer with a clear identity. Under the long-standing direction of Elisabetta Geppetti, it has given equal attention to the region’s Sangiovese tradition and to carefully chosen international varieties. Its name refers to two small farmhouses, or “pupille”, which look out over the surrounding hills like eyes.

Maremma stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast inland towards the Tuscan hills. Abundant sunshine, maritime breezes and, in many sites, cooler nights allow grapes to ripen while retaining useful freshness. Le Pupille works vineyards with differing elevations and soils, a diversity that suits both fragrant whites and reds ranging from immediate, food-friendly wines to more structured bottles for the cellar. In this area Sangiovese is traditionally called Morellino, and it is the defining grape of Morellino di Scansano.

The estate’s best-known wine is Saffredi, a Toscana IGT red with an international profile, generally centred on Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and Petit Verdot. Dark fruit, Mediterranean herbs, cedar-like notes and firm yet ripe tannins make it a wine capable of ageing. Poggio Valente presents a more site-focused and serious expression of Sangiovese. The Morellino di Scansano and its Riserva offer a more classical regional register: sour cherry, dried herbs, lively acidity and savoury detail.

The range also includes Pelofino, a more supple red blend, and Syrah. Poggio Argentato is the white counterpart: an aromatic Toscana Bianco that can bring together Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Traminer and Petit Manseng. Taken together, these wines show Maremma’s breadth without losing the freshness, structure and Mediterranean character that give Le Pupille’s reds their Tuscan stamp.
