Domaine André Mathieu is a family producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the best-known appellations of the southern Rhône. Bearing the name of André Mathieu, the estate works within the area’s classic, Grenache-led tradition. Its range includes red Châteauneuf-du-Pape as well as white wines from the same appellation, including the Vin di Felibre cuvée.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape surrounds the village of that name, north of Avignon. Its Mediterranean climate brings abundant sunshine, dry summers and the cooling, at times forceful, mistral wind. Vineyards occupy a varied mosaic of rounded stones, sand, clay and limestone. These soils matter greatly: stones retain heat, sand may bring perfume and finesse, while clay and limestone can contribute freshness and structure. The appellation also permits an unusually broad range of grape varieties.

For red wines, Grenache is generally central, often supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. Grenache supplies ripe red-fruit character, spice and a warm, supple texture; Syrah contributes colour, pepper and dark fruit; Mourvèdre adds firmness and savoury, earthy notes. Domaine André Mathieu’s red Châteauneuf-du-Pape therefore belongs in the generous, full-bodied regional idiom, with the structure to work well at the table and often to develop further in bottle.

The whites draw on southern Rhône varieties such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Picpoul Blanc. They commonly combine ripe stone-fruit and citrus notes with floral or herbal detail, freshness and sometimes a gently saline edge. Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is often enjoyed young for its open aroma, although well-structured examples can also evolve for several years. At Domaine André Mathieu, the appellation wines and Vin di Felibre offer a useful view of both the red and white expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
