About Château Chantalouette
Château Chantalouette is a Pomerol wine closely associated with Château de Sales, one of the larger and long-established estates in the appellation. Chantalouette is generally regarded as Château de Sales’ second wine. A second label allows the estate to select lots separately: the result remains recognisably Pomerol, while usually being more approachable than the grand vin. The exact blend and the balance between barrel and tank ageing may vary with the vintage.
Pomerol lies on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, just east of Libourne. It is a small appellation with no formal cru classification, yet it has an exceptional reputation for Merlot-led red wines. Its soils are a mosaic of clay, gravel and sand, and the distribution of these elements strongly influences both structure and character. Vineyards associated with Château de Sales sit within this Pomerol landscape, where gravelly and sandy parcels occur alongside more clay-rich sections.
Merlot is the driving grape in Château Chantalouette, bringing plum, black cherry, ripe blackberry and a rounded texture. Cabernet Franc often contributes floral lift, fresh red-fruit notes and spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon can add structure, cassis character and firmer tannins. The style is generally dry and supple, combining ripe fruit with earthy notes and restrained oak when maturation in barrel is used. With bottle age, notes of tobacco, cedar, truffle and forest floor may emerge.
The principal wine under this label is a red Pomerol blend. It is especially relevant to drinkers seeking Pomerol’s Merlot-rich character in a wine that is often enjoyable comparatively early. Serve at about 16–18°C; a short decant can help a young, reserved bottle. Duck, lamb, veal, mushrooms and dishes with roasted flavours or a savoury jus are classic partners. Strong vintages can evolve for several years, although Chantalouette is primarily intended to show Pomerol’s charm at an earlier stage than the grand vin.
