About Cantina Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano
Cantina Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano is a cooperative producer based in Scansano, in southern Tuscany. Its name is closely tied to the Morellino di Scansano appellation, which forms the centre of the range. In this part of Tuscany, Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese. The cooperative model suits an area where many growers, often working small and scattered vineyard parcels, contribute fruit that is vinified under a shared cellar identity.
Scansano lies in the Maremma Toscana, between the Tyrrhenian coast and the inland hills. Its vineyards benefit from sunny, dry Mediterranean conditions, tempered by maritime breezes and variations in elevation across the rolling terrain. Soils vary from site to site and can include clay, sand, stones and calcareous material. This setting allows Sangiovese to ripen reliably while retaining an important degree of freshness. Morellino di Scansano has held DOCG status, Italy’s highest appellation category, since 2007.
The house style is centred on approachable yet recognisably Tuscan Sangiovese: cherry and plum fruit, dried herbs, floral notes and a lively, sometimes savoury finish. Ciliegiolo can bring extra juiciness and perfume to red blends, while Merlot may add roundness. The standard Morellino di Scansano is designed for relatively early drinking, whereas Roggiano Riserva aims for greater concentration, structure and capacity to develop. La Rasola is another Morellino in the portfolio, alongside Capoccia, a Maremma Toscana wine focused on Ciliegiolo.
The range also reflects the wider possibilities of the Maremma. Vin del Fattore Governo all’Uso Toscano refers to the Tuscan practice of reviving a wine with partially dried grapes, adding softness and renewed fruit character. Vigna Fiorini is a late-harvest Vermentino, while Novello Toscano represents a youthful, fruit-led red style. With San Rabano Rosato Spumante Brut, the cooperative also makes a dry sparkling rosé. The result is a collection extending beyond classic Morellino to include white, rosé, sparkling and distinctively Tuscan styles.
