Trentino-Alto Adige

Trentino-Alto Adige is a unique wine region located in northeastern Italy at the foothills of the Alps. The area is divided into two provinces: Trentino in the south, which has a typically Italian character, and Alto Adige (or Südtirol) in the north, which is heavily influenced by Austrian culture. Vineyards are often planted on mountain slopes and valleys along the Adige and Isarco rivers, benefitting from a dramatic landscape and varied altitudes.

The climate is continental, marked by warm summers and cold winters with significant day-night temperature swings, encouraging both aromatic development and fresh acidity in the wines. Soils are diverse, ranging from limestone and gravel to volcanic and alluvial deposits, depending on the altitude and location.

Key grape varieties include white grapes like Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, and Gewürztraminer, and red grapes such as Lagrein, Teroldego, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites are generally crisp, aromatic, and pure, while reds from Lagrein and Teroldego tend to be robust, spicy, and structured.

Trentino-Alto Adige features several DOCs, including Alto Adige/Südtirol DOC and Trentino DOC. Noteworthy villages are Kaltern, Tramin, and Kurtatsch. While many wines are meant to be enjoyed young, top-quality reds like Lagrein and Teroldego have the potential to age well and develop complexity.
