Kakheti

Kakheti is situated in eastern Georgia and is widely regarded as the country's most prominent and productive wine region. The area is bordered by the towering Caucasus Mountains and crossed by the Alazani River, resulting in a dry, sunny climate with warm summers and moderately cold winters. These conditions support healthy grape ripening and yield bold, expressive wines.

Kakheti’s soils are diverse, including alluvial deposits, clay, limestone, sand, and gravel, all contributing to the complexity and character of the region’s wines. The centuries-old qvevri method—fermenting and aging wine in large clay vessels buried underground—is still widely practiced here. This ancient technique imparts textural richness and distinct aromatic profiles, especially to amber (skin-contact) and red wines.

Key grape varieties include Rkatsiteli, which produces crisp and sometimes aromatic white wines, and Saperavi, a deeply colored red grape known for its robust, fruity, and tannic reds. Indigenous varieties such as Mtsvane Kakhuri, Kisi, and Khikhvi are also common, along with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. Each brings unique flavors and styles to Kakheti's wine.

The region's wines range from fresh whites and skin-contact amber wines to structured, powerful reds. Villages like Tsinandali, Kindzmarauli, and Mukuzani are famous for their specific wine styles, though there is no formal cru classification. Many Kakhetian reds, particularly Saperavi, are age-worthy, gaining complexity over time.
