The Côtes-du-Rhône is one of France's most famous and extensive wine regions, stretching along the Rhône river from south of Lyon to the vicinity of Avignon. Its climate varies: the north experiences a more continental climate, while the south enjoys a distinctly Mediterranean influence. This range allows for a wide diversity in wine styles and grape varieties.

The soils of the Côtes-du-Rhône are equally varied, including gravel, pebbles, clay-limestone, sand, and in some southern areas, the famous "galets roulés"—rounded stones that help retain heat and aid grape ripening. These soil types contribute distinctive characters to the wines.

While the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC covers many wine styles, red wines dominate, typically based on Grenache, often blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and sometimes Cinsault or Carignan. Whites are commonly made from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, and Clairette, producing aromatic, medium-bodied wines. Rosé wines are also found and are typically fresh and fruit-driven. AOC rules require that red wines (except in the north, where Syrah is dominant) contain at least 40% Grenache and set minimum standards for yields and alcohol levels.

The appellation features a clear hierarchy: above the basic Côtes-du-Rhône are Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and then named villages (such as Cairanne and Rasteau), each with stricter requirements and more defined identity. Notable Villages include Séguret and Valréas. The wines are characterized by generous fruit, supple tannins, notes of red and black fruit, herbs, and sometimes a peppery or leathery nuance. Quality examples can age well for several years, especially in better vintages and from leading producers.
