About Brotte
Brotte is a family wine house based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône. It was founded in 1931 by Charles Brotte, first as a négociant and bottler. That background still helps explain the breadth of the house: Brotte works with its own estates as well as grapes and wines sourced from long-standing regional partners. Père Anselme, seen on several labels, is one of the house’s historic signatures.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is its focal point. The appellation has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers, the cooling and drying Mistral, and considerable geological diversity. Rounded galets roulés, sand, clay and limestone may all occur across its vineyards. Brotte’s wines here include La Fiole du Pape Père Anselme and the red and white wines of Domaine Barville. La Fiole is immediately recognisable for its undulating bottle; the wine itself is a classic southern Rhône blend rather than a separate appellation or grape variety.
Grenache usually provides the foundation for red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, bringing ripe red fruit, herbs and breadth. Syrah contributes colour, pepper and dark fruit, while Mourvèdre may add structure and savoury depth. The whites, including Les Hauts de Barville Blanc, draw on traditional Rhône varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. They often combine ripe stone-fruit and floral notes with herbal detail, sometimes a gently waxy texture, and a fresh finish.
Beyond Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Brotte offers a broad southern Rhône range. Red, white and rosé Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and Cairanne generally provide a more approachable view of Grenache-led blends. Domaine Grosset and Création Grosset reflect the house’s presence in Cairanne. Under the Père Anselme name, it also makes a varietal Syrah from Pays d’Oc. Brotte is therefore a useful producer for exploring the contrast between regional Rhône blends, a cru such as Cairanne, and the deeper, more ageworthy wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
