About Leopard’s Leap
Leopard’s Leap is a South African producer closely associated with Franschhoek in the Western Cape. The house represents a modern, approachable view of the Cape’s principal grape varieties, making wines that aim for clarity of fruit while retaining a sense of regional character. Its range includes both recognisable varietal bottlings and blends, an important part of South African wine culture.
Fruit is sourced beyond Franschhoek itself. Alongside vineyards in and around the Franschhoek valley, Leopard’s Leap works with grapes from other parts of the Western Cape, including Swartland. This reflects the diversity of a country where altitude, ocean influence, soils and water availability can differ markedly. Franschhoek generally has a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers, moderated by its topography and winds. Swartland is typically warmer and drier, and is often valued for riper, more concentrated fruit, particularly Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Rhône-inspired blends.
The house style centres on clean fruit, balance and usefulness at the table. The unwooded Chardonnay offers a fresher expression not shaped by prominent new oak. Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc connect with the Cape’s strong reputation for vibrant white wines. The reds range from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to Shiraz and Pinotage. Pinotage, South Africa’s own crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, receives particular attention in wines such as Special Edition Pinotage and Pinotage-Shiraz.
Red blends including Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot and Lookout Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz bring together Cabernet’s structure and blackcurrant profile with the softness of Merlot or the spice of Shiraz. Chardonnay-Pinot Noir and the Culinaria Collection Pinot Noir-Chardonnay further show the breadth of the portfolio. Leopard’s Leap is especially useful for drinkers wishing to explore several faces of the Western Cape: fresh, straightforward whites, fruit-led reds and blends where international varieties stand alongside Pinotage, the country’s signature grape.
