About Ironstone
Ironstone Vineyards is a family-owned California producer whose name is associated with its winery in Murphys, Calaveras County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The estate works with vineyards it owns and has managed over the long term in areas including Lodi and the Sierra Foothills. This gives Ironstone access to two notably different California settings: the warm inland plains around Lodi and the more elevated, contoured country at the edge of the Sierra Nevada.
Lodi is particularly important for the red wines. Its Mediterranean climate, with warm days moderated by cooler nights, allows Zinfandel to develop generous fruit while usually retaining useful freshness. Old vines are especially significant for Old Vine Zinfandel. Soils and mesoclimates vary widely across this large appellation, and Ironstone also draws on that diversity for Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot and other red varieties. In the Sierra Foothills, elevation and often lean, well-drained soils can bring a different emphasis: aromatic lift, structure and lively tension.
The house style is approachable without being simplistic: clear California fruit, a ripe texture, and measured oak where the wine calls for it. Chardonnay is generally generous and juicy, with stone-fruit and citrus notes, while Reserve Chardonnay places greater emphasis on concentration and barrel ageing. The reds commonly show ripe berries, plum and spice, sometimes with cocoa or cedar. Reserve bottlings represent the more layered and structured expressions of a grape variety or blend.
Zinfandel is central to the range, from Old Vine Zinfandel to a Reserve bottling. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah demonstrate the estate’s more serious red-wine side. Reserve Meritage is a Bordeaux-inspired blend, generally led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by other classic varieties. Obsession Symphony is another distinctive wine: an aromatic white made from Symphony, a California crossing of Muscat of Alexandria and Grenache Gris. Ironstone is therefore known for a broad, dependable Californian range in which old-vine Zinfandel, fragrant white wine and substantial reserve reds sit comfortably together.
