About Domaine de la Charbonnière

Domaine de la Charbonnière is a family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône Valley. It is principally associated with red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, while also working in Vacqueyras and producing a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its cuvées often carry the name of a lieu-dit or individual vineyard parcel, underlining the estate’s interest in origin within the appellation.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a Mediterranean climate, with dry sunny summers, modest rainfall and the influence of the mistral. Vineyard soils vary considerably, from rolled pebbles over clay to sand and limestone-rich ground. These distinctions shape the wines. Stones absorb and release heat, clay can retain water in dry years, and sand often brings finesse and aromatic lift. Vacqueyras likewise benefits from warmth and wind, with the Dentelles de Montmirail close by as a defining feature of the landscape.

Grenache is central to the red wines, bringing ripe red fruit, spice and a generous shape. Syrah and Mourvèdre may contribute colour, peppery notes, freshness and tannin. The regular Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally a blend intended to express the broad, sun-filled character of the appellation. Vacqueyras is often firmer and more earthy in register. Les Hautes Brusquières is a cuvée identified with a specific vineyard name, making it particularly relevant to drinkers seeking a more site-focused expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape follows the Rhône tradition of varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. Expect texture, ripe citrus, white flowers and, at times, fennel-like herbal notes rather than a taut cool-climate profile. The reds suit lamb, braised dishes and grilled meats; well-kept bottles can gain earthy, leathery and savoury complexity with bottle age.
