About Biserno

Biserno is a Tuscan wine estate in Bibbona, on the coastal side of the Alta Maremma. The property was established in the 1990s by Lodovico Antinori, who had previously played an important part in the development of Bolgheri as a home for international red varieties. Biserno sits slightly inland and at a higher elevation than Bolgheri’s best-known vineyards. Its wines share the coastal Tuscan context, while retaining a distinct identity of their own.

The vineyards occupy rolling slopes close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Sunlight, sea breezes and cooler currents from the hills help grapes retain freshness in a warm Mediterranean climate. Soils vary across the estate and include clay, sand, stones and calcareous elements. Cabernet Franc is central to Biserno’s work, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Syrah also has an important role in the more immediately approachable wines.

The estate focuses principally on Toscana IGT wines, following a Bordeaux-influenced approach adapted to Maremma ripeness and savoury character. Ripe dark fruit, cassis, plum, cedar, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and, at times, a saline note are recurring markers. The leading reds combine concentration with freshness and firm, generally polished tannins. Oak maturation is significant, but intended as part of the wines’ structure and evolution rather than as an end in itself.

Il Pino di Biserno is a key estate blend and a relatively approachable yet serious expression of the house style. Lodovico is the rarer flagship cuvée, generally powerful and built for bottle ageing. Campo di Sasso Insoglio del Cinghiale offers a fruitier, more supple view of the same coastal area, blending Syrah with Bordeaux varieties. Bibbona is more than a place name on the label: its maritime influence, warmth and structure are fundamental to Biserno’s character.
