Los Carneros

Los Carneros, often referred to simply as Carneros, is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) that spans the southern parts of both Napa and Sonoma Counties, just north of the San Pablo Bay in Northern California. The region benefits from cool breezes and fog from the bay, making it one of California’s coolest premium winegrowing districts. These conditions favor slow grape ripening, preserving acidity and fresh fruit aromas in the wines.

The soils in Carneros are predominantly clay loam, with good drainage and relatively low fertility, which lowers yields but enhances flavor concentration. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the signature grapes of Carneros, thriving in the cool temperatures and expressing vibrant acidity, delicate fruit, and complex aromas. Small plantings of Merlot, Syrah, and varietals like Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc can also be found, adding diversity to the offerings.

Carneros is especially esteemed for its sparkling wines, crafted largely in the traditional method, alongside elegant still Chardonnays and Pinots characterized by bright, fresh, often mineral-driven profiles. The region’s cool climate prevents overripeness, resulting in wines of balance and finesse, with many examples worthy of cellaring.

Recognized as an AVA since 1983, Carneros has strict origin rules ensuring wines bearing its name are made from grapes grown within the boundaries. While it lacks significant towns, the reputation of estates like Domaine Carneros and Gloria Ferrer highlights its prestige. The best Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are valued for their finesse, food-friendliness, and aging potential.
