Barbera d'Alba is a DOC appellation in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, centered around the city of Alba and the hills of the Langhe. The climate is continental, with warm days, cool nights, and well-defined seasons, allowing grapes to develop aromatic complexity while preserving their natural acidity. Vineyards are usually planted on marl and clay-limestone soils, offering the wine structure and freshness.

The appellation requires at least 85% Barbera in the blend, with Nebbiolo or Dolcetto occasionally allowed in small percentages. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are rare exceptions. Barbera is known for its deep color, low tannin, and vibrant acidity, making the wines juicy, lively, and food-friendly.

Classic Barbera d'Alba wines are ruby to garnet in color, and display flavors of sour cherry, plum, and sometimes violet or spice notes, depending on the winemaking technique. Some are aged in stainless steel for freshness, while others spend time in oak, gaining extra depth and aging potential. While most are meant to be enjoyed while young, oak-aged examples can mature gracefully for several years.

Prominent villages within the appellation include Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra. Barbera d'Alba pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, ragù-based pasta, roast chicken, ossobuco, and local cheeses, owing to its bright acidity and moderate body.
