About Santa Rita
Santa Rita is one of the historic names in Chilean wine. The estate was founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernández Concha at Alto Jahuel, in the Maipo Valley south of Santiago. Its 120 name recalls an episode from Chile’s struggle for independence: following the Battle of Rancagua in 1814, 120 patriots are said to have found refuge on the Santa Rita estate. The old cellars and property therefore carry both wine and national-historical significance.
Maipo is Santa Rita’s foundation. Its Mediterranean climate, dry summers and the cooling influence of the Andes are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The regional profile often combines blackcurrant and cassis fruit with herbs, cedar notes and firm yet generally polished tannins. Santa Rita also sources from other Chilean areas. The coastal Leyda Valley brings freshness to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, while Rapel and particularly Colchagua offer warmer conditions for Carmenère, Merlot, Syrah and red blends.
The house style is classically Chilean: ripe but defined fruit, recognisable varietal character and an accessible structure. The 120 Reserva Especial range is central to the portfolio and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Medalla Real Gran Reserva represents a more selective and usually more structured expression. Tres Medallas is a longstanding varietal range, while Secret Reserve explores red blends. Triple C is among the best-known flagship wines, built around Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère.
Santa Rita covers a broad spectrum, from fresh whites for the table to reds that can reward a few years in bottle. Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon remains its reference point, with Carmenère also playing a prominent role. In Argentina, the wider group is associated with Doña Paula in Mendoza; that is a separate winery within the same group, rather than the origin of Santa Rita’s Chilean-labelled wines.
