About Riporta

Riporta is an Italian wine label whose range centres on two familiar red varieties: Primitivo and Sangiovese. The wines listed include a Primitivo, an Old Vines Sangiovese and an Old Vines Primitivo di Manduria. Widely documented information on the house’s founding, ownership and individual vineyard sites is limited. It is therefore most useful to understand Riporta through its origins and the style designations shown on its wines.

Its core reference point is Puglia, the southeastern Italian region forming the country’s “heel”. A warm, sunny and relatively dry Mediterranean climate encourages dependable ripening in black grapes. Primitivo di Manduria comes from the area around Manduria in Salento. There, Primitivo can make wines with a ripe, ample character: dark fruit, dried plum, spice and, at times, an impression of warmth and sweetness from alcohol. Primitivo di Manduria is a protected appellation, so wines carrying the DOC name must comply with its production rules.

Primitivo is genetically related to Zinfandel and is known in Puglia for early ripening; its name derives from *primo*, or “first”. Riporta’s selection presents the variety both in a general Puglian expression and in the more specifically defined Primitivo di Manduria. The Old Vines wording suggests grapes from older vines, but it is not in itself a legally defined quality category. Without further producer detail, it does not establish a precise vine age or yield.

Old Vines Sangiovese provides a second, classically Italian perspective. Sangiovese is often marked by cherry, red plum, dried herbs and a fresher line of acidity than Primitivo. Overall, Riporta stands for approachable, fruit-led Italian reds: Primitivo for rounded richness, and Sangiovese for a livelier, more savoury profile. Serve the reds just below room temperature, around 16–18 °C, with roasted meats, tomato-based dishes or substantial pasta sauces.
