About Rijk's
Rijk’s Private Cellar is a family-oriented estate in the Tulbagh valley, inland in South Africa’s Western Cape. Closely associated with winemaker Rijk Melck, the estate has built its reputation around wines that are generous in fruit yet balanced in structure. Pinotage and Chenin Blanc are at the centre of its work. Rijk’s association with the Cape Winemakers Guild also places it among South Africa’s established quality producers; Guild wines are made in small quantities for the organisation’s annual auction.
Tulbagh lies in a basin framed by mountain ranges. Its Mediterranean climate brings dry, sunny summers, while altitude, mountain influence and cooler nights can help retain freshness in the grapes. Soils across the valley are varied and include weathered granite and clay-rich sites. This combination can give white wines both tension and texture, and red wines concentration without necessarily sacrificing definition. Rijk’s sources its fruit from the region with an emphasis on ripe, complete flavours and a clear sense of place.
Pinotage is the estate’s best-known red-wine pillar. The range extends from the more immediately approachable Touch of Oak Pinotage to Private Cellar Pinotage and the more ambitious Reserve Pinotage. These wines commonly show dark berry and plum fruit, spice, earthy notes and, according to the cuvée, a measured contribution from oak. Rijk’s also produces a Cape Winemakers Guild Pinotage: a small-production selection intended for the annual auction, generally offering added depth and cellar potential. The house style favours ripeness and firm, polished tannins, balanced by sufficient freshness.
Chenin Blanc is equally important among the whites. Private Cellar Chenin Blanc typically combines stone-fruit and citrus characters with a lightly waxy, spicy texture. A Cape Winemakers Guild Chenin Blanc is also part of the estate’s limited-production work. The Auction Reserve Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc brings together Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic lift with the breadth and structure of Semillon, a long-established Cape pairing. For drinkers, Rijk’s offers a useful view of Tulbagh through serious Pinotage and layered white wines.
