About Lanzerac

Lanzerac is a historic wine estate in Stellenbosch, in South Africa’s Western Cape. The estate’s origins date to 1692, when the land was granted as a farm. Over time it developed as a farming, wine and hospitality property. Its name is consequently associated not only with wine, but also with the historic hotel on the estate. For wine drinkers, Lanzerac’s particular importance lies in its place in the history of Pinotage.

The property sits on the edge of Stellenbosch in the Jonkershoek Valley. Mountains, changes in elevation and cooling air currents create a temperate Mediterranean setting despite the Cape’s warm summers. Soils vary, including weathered granite and sandy, free-draining sites. These conditions can give red grapes structure while helping white varieties retain freshness. Stellenbosch is especially noted for fine red wines, notably Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, while Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc also perform strongly.

Lanzerac gained international recognition for releasing the first commercially bottled Pinotage in 1959. Pinotage, South Africa’s cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, therefore remains central to the range. Its wines generally favour a ripe, structured expression, with dark fruit, spice and earthy notes, and, according to the cuvée and oak regime, cocoa or coffee-like nuances. Alongside the established Pinotage, the estate makes a rosé and Aliquid Novi Pinotage, a more individual, ambitious interpretation of the variety.

The red portfolio also includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Bordeaux-inspired blends. Le Général is the leading wine in that idiom, typically centred on Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by other Bordeaux varieties. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc form the white range; Mrs. English is the estate’s recognised Chardonnay. Overall, Lanzerac represents Stellenbosch wines with ripe fruit, evident yet integrated structure, and a direct historical connection to Pinotage. Its leading reds can develop further complexity with bottle age.
