About Cuatro Rayas

Cuatro Rayas is a Rueda producer in Castilla y León, closely associated with La Seca, one of the denomination’s key villages for Verdejo. Its background is cooperative: growers from the surrounding area bring together vineyards and experience. This gives the winery access to a broad mosaic of sites and allows it to offer several expressions of the region’s signature white grape, Verdejo.

Rueda occupies a high plateau northwest of Madrid, within the Duero basin. Its vineyards experience a continental climate: dry, hot summers, cold winters and marked day-to-night temperature shifts. Sandy, stony soils, frequently covered with rounded pebbles, drain readily and help moderate vine vigour. The area around La Seca also includes old Verdejo vines, valued for fruit with greater concentration and more complex flavour.

The core style is dry, fresh and clearly varietal. In Rueda, Verdejo commonly combines citrus, apple and pear notes with fennel and other green-herb aromas, often finishing with a subtle, characteristic bitterness. Protection from oxygen and stainless-steel vinification preserve its bright, direct profile. Some bottlings spend time on fine lees, adding texture and a more rounded palate without losing the grape’s essential freshness.

The range includes approachable Rueda Verdejos such as Cuatro Rayas, Cantarranas, Bitácora, 4R and Four Lines, as well as selections including Viñedos Centenarios Sobre Lías, Visigodo, Cuarenta Vendimias, Dama del Lago, Palacio de Vivero and Azumbre. These names indicate different selections or winemaking approaches rather than formal quality levels within Rueda. The house also makes an organic Tempranillo. For wine drinkers, Cuatro Rayas is especially useful as a view of Verdejo’s range: from light, immediate wines to more textural examples from old vines or with lees ageing.
