Château l’Hospitalet is the Gérard Bertrand estate in La Clape, an appellation close to Narbonne on the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc. Its name refers to a historic site in the limestone Massif de la Clape. Once an island, this landscape now sits between the sea, lagoons and scented garrigue. Its setting is fundamental to the wines: abundant sunshine and dry Mediterranean summers are moderated by sea breezes, while the often strong north-westerly wind helps keep the vineyards well ventilated.

The soils are chiefly limestone, with poor, stony parcels that encourage vines to root deeply. Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache are the leading red varieties in La Clape, producing wines that are ripe and herbal but usually retain a sense of freshness. Roussanne, Vermentino and Bourboulenc provide an apt foundation for white wines. Viognier also has a clear place in the estate’s range, notably in H de L’Hospitalet Viognier. Maritime influence, limestone and Mediterranean vegetation together help explain the saline and herbal nuances often found in these wines.

Château l’Hospitalet’s style combines generous fruit and concentration with a clear regional identity. Its red La Clape wines commonly show black berries, plum, black pepper, bay leaf, thyme and garrigue, supported by tannic structure and often by oak ageing. La Réserve La Clape and La Clape Grand Vin Rouge are among its established red labels. Art du Vivre La Clape belongs to the same regional, Mediterranean expression. Cabernet Sauvignon also appears as a supporting component in selected blends.

Grand Vin La Clape Blanc represents the estate’s white-wine side: aromatic and textural, with citrus, white stone fruit, floral notes, fennel-like herbs and a mineral impression. The whites are natural partners for fish and shellfish, whereas the reds suit grilled meats, lamb and dishes seasoned with Provençal herbs. Château l’Hospitalet is best known as an important interpreter of La Clape, where powerful Mediterranean wines gain tension from limestone soils and proximity to the sea.
