About Campo di Marzo
Campo di Marzo is associated in the available information with Italy and with wines from two distinctly different origins: Terre Siciliane in Sicily and Puglia in southern Italy. The range includes Nero d’Avola, Primitivo and Salice Salentino. There is no readily verifiable information about a separate family estate, its own vineyards, founding date or cellar location. It is therefore more accurate to understand Campo di Marzo through these appellations and grape varieties than to add an undocumented estate history.
Terre Siciliane is a broad IGT designation for Sicily. The island combines plentiful sunshine with moderating influences from the sea, elevation and cooler nights, depending on the area. Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s best-known red grape and generally makes deeply coloured wines with dark fruit, spice and a ripe yet often fresh core. The Terre Siciliane designation allows flexibility in sourcing and winemaking, so the precise expression can vary from one wine to another.
Puglia lies farther east, between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Its warm, dry climate supports reliable ripening. Primitivo typically produces generous, juicy reds with plum, black-cherry, dried-fruit and spice notes. Salice Salentino, by contrast, is a protected appellation in the Salento peninsula of southern Puglia. Its red wines are traditionally based on Negroamaro, often complemented by Malvasia Nera; together they can offer dark fruit, earthy notes, herbs and a distinctive bitter edge on the finish.
The Campo di Marzo wines therefore fit comfortably within an approachable southern Italian red-wine idiom: ripe fruit, supple texture and savoury spice, while retaining differences between Primitivo’s generosity, Nero d’Avola’s Sicilian freshness and Salice Salentino’s more savoury structure. They suit everyday Mediterranean food, grilled meats and tomato-based dishes. Serve the reds slightly cool, around 16–18°C, to keep the fruit and spice clearly defined.
