Berthet-Rayne is an estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the historic cru appellations of the southern Rhône. The domaine works within the rules of this small and prestigious appellation around the village of the same name, north of Avignon. The range recorded here comprises a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge and a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, two complementary expressions of the region. Its identity is therefore closely tied to the Mediterranean Rhône Valley and to the appellation’s unusually broad palette of permitted grape varieties.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a notably warm, sunny climate, moderated by the mistral. Its vineyards occupy a mosaic of soils, including rounded stones, sand, clay and limestone. The celebrated galets roulés absorb heat during the day and release it later, although the character of a wine also depends greatly on the particular site and subsoil. Dry summers, wind and limited rainfall make site selection and harvest timing crucial to retaining freshness and balance.

The red wine follows the traditional grammar of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache is generally the core of the blend, bringing ripe red fruit, warmth and a supple texture. Syrah may contribute colour, dark fruit and pepper; Mourvèdre structure and earthy spice; and Cinsault perfume and softness. The result is typically a generous, full-bodied red, marked by Provençal herbs, cherry and plum, and capable of developing savoury, leathery notes with bottle age.

Berthet-Rayne’s white Châteauneuf-du-Pape belongs to a smaller yet important part of the appellation. Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc are characteristic grapes, able to combine pear, white peach, floral, fennel and citrus notes with a rounded, sometimes waxy texture. These wines are appealing young at the table, while strong examples can also develop very well. Berthet-Rayne is particularly relevant to drinkers wishing to explore both red and white interpretations of this complex, sunlit Rhône appellation.
