Vinho Verde is a large and verdant wine region in the far northwest of Portugal, stretching from the Atlantic coast inland toward the Spanish border. The region enjoys a cool, humid Atlantic climate with abundant rainfall and mild temperatures, resulting in wines that are typically light, crisp, and low in alcohol. The soils are mainly granite-based, with patches of sand and schist that help preserve the grape’s vibrant acidity and give the wines a characteristic minerality.

The region is home to a diverse selection of indigenous grape varieties. Alvarinho (known as Albariño in Spain), Loureiro, Trajadura, Arinto (also called Pedernã here), Avesso, and Azal are the key white grapes, while Vinhão and Espadeiro are prominent for red wines. Vinho Verde is most famous for its fresh, slightly effervescent white wines, although rosé and red wines are also produced.

Strict DOC regulations control yields, grape varieties, and production methods across the region to maintain typical style and quality. Subregions such as Monção e Melgaço are particularly renowned for outstanding Alvarinho wines. Notable villages and producers often cluster along the rivers Minho and Lima, where cooler microclimates are ideal for aromatic, fresh wines.

Typical Vinho Verde whites are light, subtly sparkling, aromatic, and display flavors of citrus, green apple, and occasionally floral notes. They are best consumed young and pair beautifully with bright, fresh dishes such as seafood, salads, grilled fish, and goat cheese. While most Vinho Verde wines are made for early drinking, the best examples, especially those from Alvarinho, can age gracefully for several years.
