Sicily is Italy's largest wine-producing island, set in the Mediterranean Sea just off the country's southwest coast. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, featuring hot, dry summers, mild winters, and abundant sunshine, all of which promote excellent grape ripening. Cooling sea breezes and altitude variations inland contribute freshness and help retain acidity in the wines.

Sicily's soils are highly diverse: volcanic soils dominate areas around Mount Etna, while limestone and sandy soils are common in the west, and clay prevails in lower elevations. This diversity allows for a broad range of grape varieties to thrive and imparts complexity to Sicilian wines.

The island's leading red varieties include Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Nerello Mascalese, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia, and the increasingly popular Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) stand out among the whites. Sicilian wines range from robust, spicy reds and fresh, aromatic whites to fortified wines like Marsala. The best Etna wines are prized for their minerality and ageing potential.

Sicily boasts the overarching Sicilia DOC as well as numerous smaller DOCs and the distinguished DOCG Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Renowned areas include Etna, Marsala, Vittoria, and Menfi. Typically, Sicilian wines display a pleasing balance of richness and freshness, ripe fruit flavors, and moderate tannins. Top reds from Etna, in particular, are well-suited to ageing.
