Priorat is one of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions, located in Catalonia’s southwest, in the province of Tarragona. It holds the distinguished Denominació d'Origen Qualificada (DOQ) status, making it one of only two Spanish appellations with this highest quality designation.

The region is characterized by rugged terrain and terraced vineyards that cling to steep hillsides. Its distinctive llicorella soils—shimmering black slate mixed with quartz—are poor in nutrients and force vines to root deep, resulting in low yields but exceptional concentration in the wines. The Mediterranean climate, tempered by continental influences, features hot, dry summers and cool nights, supporting slow, balanced grape ripening.

The dominant grape varieties are Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), complemented by international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Some whites are made from Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo among others. Priorat wines are known for their depth, power, and complexity, offering ripe dark fruit, herbs, and a characteristic mineral undertone due to the slate soils.

Strict yield and viticultural regulations protect the DOQ Priorat’s quality. Villages such as Gratallops, Porrera, and La Vilella Alta are particularly renowned. Red Priorat wines are capable of aging gracefully for a decade or longer.
