The Mosel is one of Germany's oldest and most renowned wine regions, following the winding path of the Mosel River between Trier and Koblenz. With its northerly latitude and steep vineyard slopes, the region benefits from a cool climate that is tempered by the river and a unique microclimate ideal for viticulture.

Soils here are predominantly slate, which retains heat and releases it slowly, enabling grapes—especially Riesling—to achieve full ripeness despite the cool temperatures. The vineyards are among the steepest in the world, necessitating much manual labor during cultivation and harvest.

Riesling is the undisputed star of the Mosel, producing wines with racy acidity, delicate aromatics, and distinct minerality. Other cultivated grapes include Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The region uses a classification system largely based on the ripeness of grapes at harvest, such as Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese.

Famed villages like Bernkastel, Piesport, and Ürzig are home to classic Mosel estates. The wines range from bone dry to lusciously sweet, are often low in alcohol, and age gracefully. Their lightness and finesse make them versatile for pairing, especially with seafood, poultry, and Asian cuisine.
