The Médoc is a renowned wine region located in the southwest of France, on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. It covers the northern section of the Médoc peninsula, stretching from Bordeaux city towards the Atlantic. The area benefits from a temperate, maritime climate, with mild winters and cool summers thanks to the influence of both the ocean and the river. Regular rainfall supports balanced grape ripening each vintage.

Médoc's soils are primarily gravel-based, often overlaying clay and limestone. These well-draining soils are particularly well-suited to growing high-quality grapes, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives here, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and smaller quantities of Malbec and Carmenère. While white grape varieties can be found in the region, the Médoc AOC allows only red wines to bear its name.

Strict appellation rules govern Médoc wines, outlining where vineyards can be located, yield limits, and production methods. Although famous villages like Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Margaux are located within the Médoc, they have their own appellations. The term 'Bas-Médoc' is sometimes used for the wider northern area, but it is not legally permitted on wine labels. The Médoc is distinguished from the southern Haut-Médoc subregion by subtle climatic and soil differences.

Typical Médoc wines are robust and structured, with characteristic flavors of dark fruit, cedar, and sometimes graphite. The best examples have notable ageing potential, evolving with time to reveal greater complexity and finesse.
