The Côte de Nuits is a northern stretch of Burgundy's Côte d'Or, running from Dijon down to just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Nestled along a limestone ridge, the region benefits from a cool, temperate climate that allows for gradual grape ripening, particularly favouring Pinot Noir. The soils here are dominated by limestone and clay, with notable variations between villages and even individual vineyard plots, making the concept of terroir especially important and influential in the wines’ character.

There are fourteen communes within the Côte de Nuits, with the most renowned being Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Six of these communes are home to grand cru vineyards, including some of France’s smallest and most prestigious appellations, such as La Romanée. While a small amount of white and rosé wine is produced, the Côte de Nuits is best known for its red wines made from Pinot Noir. Chardonnay and Aligoté are also grown, mostly for regional white wines.

Wines from the Côte de Nuits are celebrated for their intensity, complexity, and aromatic depth, displaying notes of red fruit, earth, subtle florals, and spice. Firm tannins and balanced acidity make these reds highly age-worthy, especially those from grand cru and premier cru vineyards. Over time, they develop nuance and finesse. The rare whites are fresh, lively, and elegant, but represent only a small fraction of the total production.

Strict appellation rules govern grape varieties, vineyard practices, and winemaking methods, ensuring each wine clearly reflects its origin. The region is home to legendary producers like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, underscoring the stellar reputation of the Côte de Nuits for fine, collectible wines.
