Columbia Valley is the largest and most prominent wine region in Washington State, USA, covering a vast area that includes numerous sub-AVAs and extends slightly into northern Oregon. Protected by the Cascade Mountains to the west, the area benefits from a dry, continental climate with long, sunny days and cool nights, which helps grapes mature slowly and evenly.

The soils are largely made up of sandy loam, silt, and ancient volcanic deposits, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. The climate, with its marked diurnal temperature swings, preserves fresh acidity and allows grape varietals to develop expressive aromas and well-balanced flavors.

Key grape varieties in the Columbia Valley include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Riesling, and Chardonnay, alongside others like Cabernet Franc and Viognier. Red wines are typically full-bodied and fruit-forward, with an elegant structure and notes of dark berries and spice. White wines, especially Riesling and Chardonnay, are known for their fresh acidity and clean, varietal expression.

Columbia Valley holds an official AVA (American Viticultural Area) designation and contains several famous sub-AVAs such as Yakima Valley and Walla Walla Valley. Noteworthy vineyard areas include Red Mountain and Horse Heaven Hills. Many Columbia Valley wines, particularly the reds, have excellent aging potential.
