About Poças
Poças is an independent Portuguese wine house founded in 1918, with roots in the Port trade. The company is based in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where Port was traditionally matured and sold. Still family-owned, Poças combines this long-standing connection to fortified wine with a substantial range of still Douro wines. Its catalogue therefore offers two expressions of the same valley: fortified wines shaped by ageing and dry red and white wines in which site and freshness are more prominent.
The grapes come from the demarcated Douro region, a mountainous landscape of steep, often terraced vineyards on schist. Hot, dry summers bring concentration, while altitude, aspect and differences between the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior can preserve nuance and freshness. Key red and Port varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. Dry whites draw on varieties such as Rabigato, Viosinho, Côdega de Larinho and Malvasia Fina, valued for aromatic detail and tension.
Port remains the historical core of the house. Ruby Ports, including Comenda Ruby and Porto Seguro Ruby, emphasise dark fruit and a youthful, straightforward character. Tawny Ports spend extended time in wood, developing notes of nuts and dried fruit; the 10 and 20 Years Old Tawnies and Casa de Santa Bárbara 10 Years Old Tawny belong to this family. A Colheita is also a wood-aged tawny, but from a single harvest. Late Bottled Vintage Port delivers the deep, structured profile of a vintage-style Port after longer cask ageing before bottling. Vintage Port is the most concentrated category and is intended to develop further in bottle.
Poças also produces dry Douro DOC wines, including Coroa d’Ouro Branco, Vale de Cavalos and Poças Reserva Tinto. The reds generally combine ripe dark fruit, spice and firm yet mature tannins, while the whites aim for citrus, stone fruit and a mineral edge. Poças is particularly rewarding for drinkers wishing to explore the classic Port categories alongside approachable, regionally grounded Douro wines from one family house.
